The Last Anglo-Saxon King | Harold Godwinson
Harold Godwinson, the last Saxon king of England, , his legacy often eclipsed by the bitter defeat at the Battle of Hastings. Yet, this singular, bloody day does not define the man. Harold was a warrior of unparalleled ferocity, a general whose strategic genius brought the Viking Age to a brutal end. His victory over Harald Hardrada, the last great Viking king, was a clash drenched in blood and thunder resulting in many tales both in Viking sagas and in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Harold would also conquer Wales and had a life that unfolded amidst one of England's most turbulent eras, a time rife with the fall of dynasties and the relentless uncertainty of fate. His legacy is one of immense victory, but also of crushing defeat, fighting to the bitter end. This is the story of the last saxon king Harold Godwinson.

    He wasn't Albanian, he was Byzantine. Enthicity didn't matter at that time, neither was coined like it's today. Christianity, nobility and to which empirial power you pledge mattered. Sadly Albania ditched its Grecoroman legacy and became different after Kastrjot.

    Sounds like he was one of those men of integrity who knew from a young age that respect is earned, not given. Irreverent towards the petulant dogmas of the upper class culture, he saw through the hypocrisy and decadence of it. He was authentic, comfortable in his more vulgar impulses, and through that maintained a connection with those of the lower class. A trickster archetype, he laughed before the court and, through ostentatious display of his entitled privileges, mirrored to the world the insufferable duplicitousness of the unmerited and anal egotism which characterized the culture of feudal rulers. Yet with age came the wisdom of a sage. Instead of becoming a caricature of his boyish self, his full integration of that childish spirit gave him a menacing sensitivity. His personality flourished as it bore ultimate respect for the toil of the peasantry while also maintaining a scathing and shrewd grip over the culture of treachery which set the terms for life in his era.

    Ah King Harold II of England. The rightful king in 1066. Chosen by Edward The Confessor and also by The Witan. Doesn't get anymore legit than that. Of course you don't hear that though do you. No you hear all about William The Usurper's propaganda instead about how he was promised the crown and all that nonsense. He wasn't and even if King Edward did do that, the Witan had the final say on who would be king. People need to realise this and stop bashing King Harold for "taking the throne for himself." It was his, not William's, not Hardrada's.

    • @historyprofiles
      @historyprofiles 2 дні тому

      I agree, kingdom entrusted to him on edwards death bed, Harold had the backing of the witan and was Englands most most experienced military commander and somewhat had royal blood with his ancestor being a king of Wessex. I did say in the video that William probably wasn’t promised the crown as Edward the confessor invited Edward the exile to his court and would have named him heir but he died on the way. The witan would have considered the merits of all four candidates and chose Harold who at the time was the epitome and the Anglo-Scandinavian realm being half Saxon and Dane. I think the godwins get a lot of flack but that’s down to Godwin. Harold was a great king and is overshadowed in history! So I had to a long video on the man!

      Very true that’s why his second name is godwinson, the son of Godwin, he probably had his mother to thank for his last name as she was the Scandinavian thus her culture greatly influenced him and his name. However, his father was the Saxon therefore by his paternal lineage he would have been regarded as an Anglo Saxon. The last Anglo Saxon king makes for a much better title than the last Anglo-Scandinavian king! I hope you enjoyed the video though!

    Poor Harold Godwinson, he wasnt deigned to be king of England for long as our Almighty Father had other things planned for the future. But he was used to stop that great warrior king from the north, Harald Hardrada from ever seeing the English throne. Harold's lightning campaign of destruction in Wales was an operation of skill and genius, they knew from bloody experience how the Welsh fought and planned accordingly. The English forces eschewed their beloved chain mail so they can move swiftly into the bad Welsh terrain and harry the people to exhaustion. The Cymru, a particularly stubborn and hard fighting people had had enough, Gruffydd's bloody truculent head was sent to Harold. Even Edward I massive campaign of conquering Wales was never as effective. Harold would have made a great king of England had he lived, but alas this was not to be. The ambitious energetic Duke William of Normandy was to be king and sired a long line of kings and nobles. Aethelred the Unraed bad rule set England up to be conquered TWICE.

      @@historyprofiles Indeed! The men of Wessex saw the Danes and Norsemen as existential threats even more so than the Angles from the times of the Heptarchy. Witness the significant resistance from the House of Wessex put up with Alfred then his children Aethelflaed and Edward the Elder up to his mighty grandson Athelstan Bretwalda. Aethelred failed to live up to his ancestors sense of honour and his own son Edmund Ironside's devotion to duty. The man invited dread and devastation with his incorrigible act of stupidity on St. Brice's Day, even though I do believe the Danes from the boroughs were conspiring against him, what he did to them was beyond senseless and quite fitting to his nomenclature. The fool left a punishing burden upon his valorous son to bear and decimated the Anglo Saxon fighting nobility, leaving space for the Danish henchmen of Cnut to establish control. The seeds had been sown for that fateful day in 1066.

      It was Harold's throne. Edward gave it to him, The Witan chose him. It doesn't get anymore legitimate than that. The Witan had the final say. Stop spreading shit.
